THE POWER OF GOAL SETTING - Achieving The Future You Desire

 Kampi Laari Robert

"Man, I have goals I want to achieve but they are not on paper rather in my mind...."
At the start of this year, this was the answer a friend of mine gave me after I quizzed him on goal setting. Well, for most of us that is all we know and hence approach the subject of goal setting. Once you have it in your mind it ceases to be a goal until it's written down and backed with a plan. We plan to succeed, once you don't plan, then you uncontrollably plan to fail.
Friend hear this, Have you come to a point in your personal life where you felt very fulfilled because you first planned to succeed? Watch this!

As the year draws to an end, you may be happy with yourself that you have been able to do all you planned doing this year or you may be disappointed in yourself for not doing as much as you planned doing. Which ever way it is for you, you need to end the year on a positive note. The time to continue dwelling on the negative is over.  The year is about to end but it doesn't mean is the end of your possibilities. The end of the year doesn't mean the end of your life. The end of each year marks the beginning of another glorious moment to make your dreams come to pass.

So, if the year 2017 didn't go well as planned don't break your spirit and allow impossible things to occupy your mind as we move into 2018.  Lift yourself by doing just one thing within these 10 days remaining.

SET GOALS FOR YOURSELF AGAINST 2018.
I am excited because of the insights we will share in this write up. I believe we all might have read or come across the subject of goal setting in one way or the other. Nevertheless, I believe we will learn something from this article.

Why Goal setting?
Studies have shown that only 3% of the population of US sets goals and that 3 % are among the wealthiest and most prosperous people in the country. I do not know what the percent in the world is but I will assume is lower than that.
So why is it that people don’t set goals, especially when we know that those who do set goals are in a place where we will all want to be?
If you ask why most people will tell you they don’t know how to do it, or that they don’t have the time nor the patience necessary. It's obvious we have no idea how much we can discover about ourselves once we take the time to write our thoughts and our dreams down on a piece of paper. Care Robin once said, "To be all we can be we must dream of being more. To do all that is possible, we must attempt the impossible".

There are so many things we don’t know about ourselves, about life, about what is possible and what is not possible, about what we can/can’t do, and most of us choose to believe everything other people tell us to believe without questioning a single word.

I remember when I was a little boy I had a very strong belief that grown-ups, especially the elders, had the answers to all of my questions and I believed everything they told me as being true, not questioning a single word.
Well, as I grew up, things changed, I changed, and I started using more of my own brain and I started questioning all the things that no longer made sense for me.
If we have a brain, we might as well use it, right? Unfortunately, not all of us are willing to do it and that is why we don’t think and just allow others do most of the thinking for us.
Who says that you can only dream while a child? We need dreams for they keep us alive, we need dreams for without dreams we are like birds with broken wings. It is so with goals. They form an integral part of our success story. Our future can only be beautiful if we plan towards it. “Goals are not only absolutely necessary to motivate us. They are essential to really keep us alive.” ~ Bill Copeland

Take a piece of paper and let your imagination run wild. Write down everything you dream of becoming, everything you want to have and everything you want to be. Don’t be afraid, if you haven’t done this in a while, or maybe never, you might think you have little or nothing to write, but that’s not true. You know it and I know it.
We all have dreams. Dreams give us hope about the future and with hope everything is possible.
Remember when you were a little boy/girl and you knew exactly what you wanted to do with your life? Remember how you used to dream all day long about the great things you would one day accomplish? What happened to your dreams?…
I will tell you what happened. Everybody around you started telling how things aren't the way you think they are, and that life is hard, life is tough and you need to be more realistic, and you gave up. You became one of them and you decided to leave your dreams behind you… This is how you forgot about your dreams.
Such a sad story, isn't it? Not really. If you can find the courage to bring them back to life and work toward making them come true, it won’t be a sad but a wonderful life story, the story of your life.

How do I set my goals in life?
So start writing. Ask yourself:

What do I really want?
Write down all that comes to your mind, whether you think is crazy or not, whether you think is possible or impossible. It does not matter. Forget about your limits and dare to dream, big dreams, for they are the ones who move the hearts of men like Goethe once said it.
After making your list, wait an hour or two to pass, read the list and ask yourself these questions:
Why do I want this?
If you can’t seem to get an answer, then it’s not really a dream, and it won’t become a goal for you. We don’t want to waste any time on something we don’t really want. Cross it off your list.
We want only those things that keep us focused, enthusiastic, excited and passionate.
We don’t want to be living somebody else’s dream, right? We’re done with doing that. We only want to do those things that bring us joy, peace, and happiness. We only want to do those things that are morally right for us and for those around us.
If you have doubts about any of them, you will have to cross them off the list. We have to make sure that we set our goals properly for a goal properly set is halfway reached as Abraham Lincoln said it.
“You have to set goals that are almost out of reach. If you set a goal that is attainable without much work or thought, you are stuck with something below your true talent and potential.”~Steve Garvey
With those dreams that are left, ask yourself if each and every one of them will make you feel better about yourself if they will bring inner peace and joy into your life and the lives of those you love.

LET YOUR GOALS BE S-M-A-R-T.
In setting your goals for the coming year, make sure they SMART. It's an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable,  Achievable, Realistic and Time bound.
Specific: The more detailed you can be, the better. “I wan to go to school” is a good start, but “I want to go to University for Development Studies to study Medicine and qualify as a professional doctor to save lives makes it easier to visualize and achieve what you want.
Measurable: Here precision is your friend. When you can measure, you’ll actually see your progress and know when you achieve it. Concrete criteria helps everyone stay on track. For example, “invest my monthly salary”  Just invest here is not measurable; you have to let the goal to understand your current spending patterns, pay off your your utilities , and start saving 25% of your income per month by the end of the year — now you have benchmarks that you can achieve and recalibrate if necessary.
Achievable: If you can’t actually attain your goal it will only serve to frustrate and dishearten you. You’re not going to create a billion-dollar business or become a world-class concert pianist overnight. Many times when we’re creating big goals we get too lofty, making them seem impossible. This leads us to the next element…
Realistic: Perhaps in an ideal world need  to have six hours a day to work on your golf swing or tennis game. You live in the real world, not an ideal one, so make sure you’re setting goals that match up with reality.
Time bound : Having a clear idea of your timeline creates a sense of urgency. You’ll be working towards what you want more quickly.
Having this level of clarity puts power behind your goals and ensures you can measure your progress more often and take new actions.

I believe we can make good use of the power of goal setting to get the best out of life. Don't procrastinate, there is no better day than today. Go ahead and write down your goals. Don't just think about them in your mind. Put them on paper. Start working towards its success. God will help us all realise them one by one.
See you at the top!
