The Unknown Facts About Robert Gabriel Mugabe of Zimbabwe

  1.      The leader of Zimbabwe since its independence in 1980, and the longest-serving leader in the world today is President Mugabe, officially as Robert Gabriel Mugabe. He was born on 21st February 1924 in Katuma, a Jesuit mission station 50 miles west of the Southern Rhodesian capital. His mother, Bona, belonged to the prominent Shona ethnic group, whilst his father, Gabriel Matibili, was a carpenter from Nyasaland, now Malawi. Mugabe is aged 93 now.

2.      Although many people in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) went only as far as a grammar school, Mugabe was fortunate enough to receive a good education. He attended Marist Brothers and Jesuit schools, including the exclusive Kutama College, headed by an Irish priest, Father Jerome O’Hea, who took him under his wing. He graduated from Katuma’s St. Francis Xavier College in 1945. For the next 15 years he taught in Rhodesia and Ghana and pursued further education at Fort Hare University in South Africa.

It was Ghana, where he met his wife Sally Hayfron for the first time and got married to her. However, he got married to Grace Marufu, who is his present wife, after Sally’s death, at age four his first with Sally died.

4.      Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) came under the British rule at that point of time and the region was under too much political stress. A 1978 accord between Smith’s government and moderate black leaders paved the way for the election of Bishop Abel Muzorewa as prime minister of the state known as Zimbabwe Rhodesia, but it lacked international recognition because ZANU and ZAPU had not participated.

5.      Mugabe spent 11 years as a political prisoner under Ian Smith’s Rhodesian government. Whilst in prison he taught English to his fellow prisoners and earned multiple graduate degrees by correspondence from the University of London. Freed in 1974, Mugabe went into exile in Zambia and Mozambique, and in 1977 he gained full control of ZANU’s political and military fronts. He adopted Marxist and Maoist views and received arms and training from Asia and Eastern Europe.

6.      Mugabe was selected Public Secretary of the National Democratic Party in 1960.
18. He co-founded Zimbabwe African National Union in 1963. Mugabe rose to lead the Zimbabwe African National Union movement and was one of the key negotiators in the 1979 Lancaster House Agreement, which led to the creation of a fully democratic Zimbabwe. Elected prime minister and later president, he embraced conciliation with the country’s white minority but sidelined his rivals through politics and force. After winning new elections on March 4, 1980, Mugabe worked to convince the new country’s 200,000 whites, including 4,500 commercial farmers, to stay.

7.      Robert Mugabe is famous for his violent crusades against homosexuality and became the first president to propose marriage to a US President after the US legalized same-sex marriage, this was his response to Barack Obama.
‘I’ve just concluded – since President Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people and enjoys an attractive countenance – thus if it becomes necessary, I shall travel to Washington, DC, get down on my knee and ask his hand. I can’t understand how this people dare to defy Christ’s explicit orders as our Lord prohibited mankind from sodomy’.
He went on to accuse the U.S. government of being run by ‘perverted Satan-worshipers who insult the great American nation.’

8.      In 1994, Mugabe was appointed an honorary Knight Grand Cross in the Order of Bath by Queen Elizabeth II, and on 25th June 2008, the Queen cancelled and annulled the honorary knighthood after advice from the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom. This action has been taken as a mark of revulsion at the abuse of human rights and abject disregard for the democratic process in Zimbabwe over which President Mugabe has presided.
Mugabe also holds several honorary degrees and doctorates from international universities, awarded to him in the 1980s; but at least three of these have since been revoked. In June 2007, he became the first international figure ever to be stripped of an honorary degree by a British university, when the University of Edinburgh withdrew the degree awarded to him in 1984. On 12 June 2008, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Board of Trustees voted to revoke the law degree awarded to Mugabe in 1986; this is the first time one of its honorary degrees has been revoked. In the same vein, on 12th September 2008, Michigan State University revoked an honorary law degree that it awarded Mugabe in 1990.

9.      Mugabe has three children (one girl and two boys): Bona Mugabe, Robert Peter Mugabe Jr. and Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe; and one stepson with Grace Mugabe, his second wife: Russell Goreraza. The last son was born in 1997, when Mugabe was already 73 and his wife 38.

10.  Robert Mugabe has written a number of books which include:
1. The Third Chimurenga: Inside the Third Chimurenga (2001).
2. War, Peace, and Development in Contemporary Africa (1987)
3. The Role of the University in the Process of Social Transformation (1983)
4. Our War of Liberation (1983)

In November 2017, his rule as President was nearly brought to a halt after an in-house cleaning by the military led to his wife Grace been blocked from contesting as president whereas Mugabe’s hold of ZANU-PF party questioned. In a televised addressed, Mugabe surprised the entire world by refusing to step down as president of Zimbabwe to the utter shame of the western imperial kingpins who are waiting for the news that never was
